In honor of HipLatina’s September theme “Words and Music,” your monthly cocktail is the rumored favorite drink of one of my favorite authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald—a gin rickey. Some people really dislike the juniper taste of gin—but I love it, I think its sharp, refreshing, and the perfect drink for in-between summer and fall climate of September. If you like a good G&T, this is a sweeter take on that classic.
Fitzgerald is rumored to have loved the gin rickey so much because he believed that you couldn’t smell the gin on his breath, and therefore no one would know how drunk he really was. While I wouldn’t advise going quite so far with that line of thinking, this recipe does make the perfect excuse to get together with your friends and have a flapper-themed party. And we’ve even provided the playlist!
Here’s the recipe:
- 2 ounces of gin (whichever kind you like, personally I’m a fan of Tanqueray)
- Cracked ice
- 1 lime, juiced
- ½ teaspoon of simple syrup
- Club soda
- 1 slice of lime.
Directions:
Fill your highball glass with ¾ of ice, then pour in your gin, lime juice, and simple syrup. Stir it all up and fill the rest of your glass with club soda. Finish with your slice of lime and voila—
a gin rickey!
